Metro Rotarians Continue Public Service
Our most recent project included assembling several Personal Energy Transportation (PET) units for those in need. A PET is basically a hand-cranked wheelchair. The completed units will be shipped overseas to be used by individuals who have lost the use of their legs.

Metro Rotary Supports the Boone County Historical Society
In celebration of the Rotary Centennial in
February, 2005, Rotary International asked each of the
31,000 Rotary clubs worldwide to develop a Centennial Project.
Under the leadership of President Rob Christensen, Columbia
Metro Rotary chose to participate by donating $5,000 to
the Boone County Historical Society.
The funds helped to construct a new exhibit at the museum, a pavilion which houses Nikawa (River Horse), the boat used in the cross country journey which was the subject of the best seller River Horse by Columbia author William Least Heat Moon. After some delay, the pavilion was completed in November of 2006. The public is invited to visit the Boone County Historical Society and enjoy this new display.
District Matching Grant Provides Water Filtration Systems for Schoolchildren in Latur, India
In 2004, District 6080 sent a GSE team to India. Metro Rotarian Tom O’Connor was a member of that team. One of the host clubs for the team was Latur Mid-Town Rotary. In 2005, Columbia Metro Rotary applied for a District Matching Grant in order to provide a water filtration system for a school in conjunction with our newfound friends in Latur. The recently-completed project provides drinking water for 1,700 students at a total cost of $1,300.

One Rotary Center
Sam Hargadine recently spent three months training at Northwestern University and walked past One Rotary Center everyday. Rotary International is a modern high-rise structure located in downtown Evanston, Illinois. Just walking past the building gives an impressive sense of what Rotary can accomplish.
