Columbia Mayor Darwin Hindman
was recognized as the recipient of the 2007 Metro Rotary
Public Service Award. The award
was presented during the club’s March 21 meeting
at the Columbia Country Club.
The
purpose of this award is to recognize someone in the
community’s public sector who adheres to the highest
ethical standards in their work, including the fair treatment
of employers, employees, associates, competitors and the
public; and one who contributes their talents to the problems
and needs of society.
Mayor Hindman has served Columbia
since his first election in 1995. He is a strong advocate
of parks and trails and
is an avid spokesman for active, healthy lifestyles. In
presenting the award, Metro President Bette Wordelman stated, "The
citizens of Columbia have benefited greatly from Mayor
Hindman's service. He is a true leader in the Columbia
community."
We are pleased to honor Mayor Darwin Hindman, and appreciate
his devotion of time and talents to the Columbia community.
In celebration of the Rotary Centennial in
February, 2005, Rotary International asked each of the
31,000 Rotary clubs worldwide to develop a Centennial Project.
Under the leadership of President Rob Christensen, Columbia
Metro Rotary chose to participate by donating $5,000 to
the Boone County Historical Society.
The funds helped to construct a new exhibit at the museum,
a pavilion which houses Nikawa (River Horse), the boat
used in the cross country journey which was the subject
of the best seller River Horse by Columbia author William
Least Heat Moon. After some delay, the pavilion was completed
in November of 2006. The public is invited to visit the
Boone County Historical Society and enjoy this new display.
In 2004, District 6080 sent a GSE team to India. Metro
Rotarian Tom O’Connor was a member of that team.
One of the host clubs for the team was Latur Mid-Town
Rotary. In 2005, Columbia Metro Rotary applied for a
District Matching Grant in order to provide a water filtration
system for a school in conjunction with our newfound
friends in Latur. The recently-completed project provides
drinking water for 1,700 students at a total cost of
$1,300.

Associate Circuit Judge Christine Carpenter was recognized
as the recipient of the 2006 Metro Rotary Public Service
Award. The award, presented to Judge Carpenter by Metro
President Sharon Mitchell, took place during the club’s
April 12 meeting at the Columbia Country Club.

President Sharon with Judge Carpenter
The purpose of this award is to
recognize someone in the community’s public sector
who adheres to the highest ethical standards in their
work, including the fair treatment
of employers, employees, associates, competitors and the
public; and one who contributes their talents to the problems
and needs of society.
Judge Carpenter supervises the
Boone County Court’s
drug court and mental health court programs, which were
created to provide treatment opportunities for individuals
with substance abuse issues and/or a psychiatric diagnosis,
most often in lieu of incarceration. “Based on her
strong commitment to the philosophy and worth of these
programs and in Rotary principles, we felt Christine was
the ideal candidate to receive this award,” Mitchell
said. “Her work has made a positive difference in
the lives of many Boone County residents. We’re pleased
too that she’s a member of Metro Rotary.”
